Department of Botany & Plant Sciences

Master of Science Program

The Plant Biology Graduate Program offers two plans for the Masters of Science to accommodate a student’s academic interests and research needs. The Plan I MS requires a research-based thesis and defense. The Plan II MSc requires a writing of a report and successful completion of the Comprehensive Exams. Please refer to the Plant Biology Graduate Student Handbook for a complete description of these program’s and their requirements.

It is encouraged that all Plant Biology MS students enroll in BPSC 200A-B (the Plant Biology Core classes focused on academic and professional development topics). All MS students must enroll in two BPSC 240 seminars (2-unit in depth study of a topic in Plant Biology related to the degree concentration), and the BPSC 250 seminar each quarter in the program (student and invited speaker seminars).

What are the differences in the Plant Biology MS plans?

Students in the MS Plan II students take more classes and have a lesser emphasis on research. Plan II students write a literature or research-based report. The Plan II MS is conferred after passing written and oral comprehensive exams. The requirements for Plan II are completely described in the Handbook.
